1971 Datsun 240Z — A Remarkable Survivor

Axel’s Garage recently had the privilege of inspecting and appraising this exceptional 1971 Datsun 240Z, owned by David Lee of Avant Garde Motor Sports in Edmonton.

Finished in striking Sunshine Yellow, this early Z-car presents with a level of originality and preservation that is increasingly difficult to find more than five decades after it left the factory.

The vehicle retains its matching-number L24 2.4-litre inline-six engine, four-speed manual transmission, period identification plates, original-style interior components, factory instrumentation and numerous age-consistent details throughout the body, engine bay and undercarriage.

What makes this 240Z especially interesting is not simply how well it presents, but how much physical evidence remains to support its long-term preservation. The underside retains extensive body-colour finish, period-style protective coating and original panel details. The interior displays remarkably limited wear, while photographs of the seat undersides show period spring construction, padding and hardware consistent with original components.

Additional period details include Nissan-marked brake components and original-style glass markings. During inspection, the engine started immediately, idled smoothly and operated without visible smoke, abnormal noise or obvious fluid leakage.

The car is not entirely untouched. It currently wears period-inspired WORK Equip 01 alloy wheels with Yokohama tires, along with a Fujitsubo header and exhaust system and an added electric fuel pump. These modifications are sympathetic to the vehicle and do not materially detract from its underlying originality.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the car is its odometer, which displays just 3,968 miles. While continuous documentation confirming that mileage from new is not presently available, the overall level of preservation makes the reading particularly noteworthy.
